Profiles of Dress is a journey through the lives of fascinating people who believe in the power of dress and who let their clothing speak for themselves.

Q: When you get dressed every morning, what types of thoughts and questions go through your head when deciding what to wear?

A: In the morning, when I am getting ready, I normally think about the type of day — is it going to be a rainy day, gloomy day? I normally wear bright colors. If it’s going to be a sunny day — “medium” colors, like a turquoise. You know, it’s how I’m feeling, but I’m always cheerful — I wear cheerful colors every day.

Q: We love different perspectives on personal style and expression, like this one:

“You can have anything you want in life if you dress for it.” —Edith Head

Do you agree or disagree and why?

A: I do agree with her because [based on] how you dress, people treat you a certain way. Sometimes in order to get ahead, you have to dress for the part. People can assume you’re an executive when you’re not and sometimes it propels you to get to the place you need to be. Dressing is everything and your image also.

Q: How do you believe clothing can help change one’s perceptions of themselves and others?

A: I’ve gone through experiences where I never used to dress sophisticated or classy because I didn’t know how to dress or I couldn’t afford certain things….Now that I am able to dress, I’m treated differently. The way I dress now has made me more confident because I was very self-conscious about my body. Now that I am dressing the right way, appropriately for my body type and shape, my confidence is way up to the ceiling!

Q: In what ways do you believe art, music, and the world of entertainment in general, informs or inspires the clothing choices you make? And, what do those choices say about you and the story you’re sharing with the world?

A: Art, fashion and music, they influence me a lot. There are all sorts of different artists that I listen to that influence how I dress [Beyonce and Christina Aguilera]. [My choices say] that I am very confident, that’ I’m a go-getter. I can never be stopped because there is no limit….It affects my confidence, how I react to people and how people react to me.

Q: What is the best piece of fashion and style advice you’ve received that’s too good not to share with the world? In what ways has this advice been invaluable to you?

A: The fashion advice I received [is] from Tyra Banks. She said [in so many words] if you have curves, you do not hide them.

Q: True or False: Wearing an outfit you feel great in impacts how you operate throughout the day.

A: True. I wore an outfit the other day that was very wrong. And I’m telling you, that day, I felt miserable. But, when I corrected it…I came out feeling happy…giving off positive and cheerful energy.
